Lund Boats: Company History
World War II led to a number of technological breakthroughs and ultimately the birth of the Lund Boating Company. It was named after founder Howard Lund. From 1940 to 1946, Lund worked for the U.S. Navy at a Navy shipyard in California before returning home to New York Mills, Minnesota.
During his time away, he regularly worked on ships and submarines. After the war, Lund didn’t stray from the water, leaning into his passion for hunting and fishing. As he immersed himself in these worlds, Lund struggled to find a duck boat suitable for his hunting needs.
He decided to stop waiting for his dream vessel and built one himself in 1948. From there, Lund Boating Company only continued to grow.
Early Innovators
Lund started production on aluminum hunting boats two years later. Soon after, the company expanded to include 12- and 14-foot fishing boats and runabouts.
The Lund Boat Company (known then as Lund Metalcraft) truly took off in the ‘50s. The post-war economy was thriving, family vacations and resorts became more common. In turn, Lund models like the S Series spread throughout Lake Country and Canadian fishing camps.
In 1968, it purchased Shell Lake Boat Company, marking Lund’s leap into fiberglass models. By 1972, Lund expanded manufacturing operations to Steinbach, Manitoba. Six years later, Lund had another pivotal moment after introducing the Mr. Pike model. It pushed the entire industry forward, overhauling the classic aluminum fishing boat to evolve alongside the modern world.
After its founder and namesake retired in 1981, the company honored his vision as the Lund roster continued to grow. The company eventually enlisted the help of professional anglers to stay ahead of the curve
They offered practical insights, inspiring a number of Lund’s technological breakthroughs that revolutionized the fishing world. The Pro Staff were imperative to Lund’s continued evolution and remain a key part of the company’s identity. With anglers on board, the brand became a big name in fishing tournaments and industry media outlets.
Pushing the Fishing into the Future
In 1999, Lund further cemented its place in the fishing boat world with its new IPS hull designs. These aluminum vessels raised the bar for the entire marine industry with their stellar fuel efficiency, performance and fishability.
Lund kept going, introducing fiberglass to its Deep V boat lineup in 1999 and expanding to serve multiple populations with its Impact and Crossover models in the early 2010s. In 2025, Lund introduced the Heavy Gauge series with designs prioritizing strength and performance versatility.
This storied history elevated Lund Boating Company to its current status as key players in the fishing boat industry. Even with an evolving and modern approach, Lund’s founding values have held firm throughout the decades.
